Hello Everyone!

We hope everybody is closing this 2017 summer with happy memories of love and fun. It is almost unreal how time flies. Here we are coming face to face with autumn one more time and one more season.   May this be a season of strength and empowerment, a reminder of how we must ease ourselves throughout the seasons of life and embrace the lessons and the experience we gain as time goes by.

This fall, NWwDEF begins with a series of classes and workshops which we are so excited to share with you. All NWwDEF’s workshops are created and presented through a vision and a voice of empowerment, and led by disabled women whose lives can speak the language of what life with a disability looks and feels like.

Below is a description of our upcoming classes. To register, please hit our “join” button and drop us an email letting us know the name of the class you are registering for. All our classes take place at the beautiful Houston Metropolitan Multi-Service Center where our office is located.   We look forward to sharing our energy of disabled woman power with all of you.

All Classes begin this September.

Creative Writing

Mondays 11:00 AM – 1:00PM

Starting September 11th

Eight week class – Organized by Maria Palacios

Through this class, participants explore “outside the box” creative ways of narrating the experience of the disabled body, as well as the intersectionality of disability as we exist in a nondisabled world.

Music Lessons

Monday 1PM to 3PM

Starting September 11th

Ongoing Class – Organized by Una Lau

This class will equip participants with individualized piano lessons. Space is limited as we want every student to have her own instrument.

Public Speaking: Sharing our story from a position of power

Thursdays 12-00PM -2:00PM

Starting September 7th

Eight week class – Organized by Maria Palacios

We all have a story to share. However, seldom do stories surrounding disability reflect the true image of who we are as disabled people.   If you have ever wanted to learn how to positively project your energy in front of an audience, or how to tell your story to educate and uplift other people, this class is for you.   Through a series of interactive exercises, guest panelists, and other tools of empowerment, participants learn to share the power of their personal story away from the pity approach to disability.

Poetry/Spoken Word Open Mike

6:00PM -8:00PM First and last Thursday of the month

Starting September 28th

Organized by Jessica Escamilla

This open mike time was created to offer an inclusive and accessible space for the poetic voices and the poetic expression as disabled writers, disabled artists and performers who often feel left out of the local poetry scenes.

Although our focus is disability themed poetry/story/spoken word, we welcome with open arms men and women (with or without disability) who may want to join us whether it is to participate or to simply witness and support poets and art.

Empowerment Workshops

Fourth Wednesday of every month 1:00PM -3:00PM

Starting September 2nd

Organized by NWwDEF volunteer department

These monthly empowerment workshops will bring education and awareness about issues pertaining to life as disabled women. From body image, to breast health, sexuality, motherhood, advocacy, employment, substance abuse and much, much more, these monthly gatherings will offer a hub of woman empowerment and education about issues that matter to us.

Please feel free to share and distribute our class schedule.   To register, please email us at nwwdef@gmail.com
